Chapter 11

Resilience

FOR THE PRESIDENT

The frequency with which a president makes mistakes or encounters setbacks requires an unusual tolerance for the risk of failure. It’s instructive to remember that Abraham Lincoln lost several nominations and elections before becoming the president. What if he had quit after any one of those defeats? How many of us could tolerate that many personal losses before throwing in the towel? How many of us would be hesitant to start, simply to avoid the possibility of failure altogether?

We generally have high expectations for our leaders. As our expectations increase, so too does the likelihood that not all of our hopes and dreams will be met. One way to limit the risk of failure is to only strive for safe and modest goals. However, this is the exact opposite of what we expect of our president and hope for ourselves—a willingness and ability to take on almost impossible problems. Therefore, a president must be resilient.
